Like a cockroach–

10 Sep 2011, Posted by Rob Thurman in Blog, Rob Thurman's Twitter

Apparently I’m indestructible. I made it home although I only remember about six days of the three 1/2 weeks I was in the hospital and have also forgotten several days before the accident. I also died for a few minutes and had to beΒ resuscitated, which is rather annoying as I’m curious as the next person about life after death, tunnels of light and all that…don’t remember *that* either. But despite my cockroach ability to keep going after being squashed I am embarrassingly weak. I can shower but not wash my own hair, which is just too long and I’m getting it whacked off the second I’m strong enough to sit for an hour in a salon chair. There are people in the hospital that have my butt crack memorized from those gowns, people in the hospital that wiped my butt, and general indignities all around. And everyone of them was nice as could be and that’s more than I can say I would be in the face of butt-wiping as part of my job. I had great care, which is probably the only reason I made it home. Β Jayda was beyond wonderful keeping everyone updated and a better webmistress and friend there could not be. I know we’d started compiling a list of winners from the contest and was set to send out prizes. I don’t remember if I actually did. But I will check with her and if not, I will get on that. It may take me a bit of time, but I know you’ll be patient. You’ve all been so wonderful I can see from the many, many comments. I’m humbled. Well, it wouldn’t be like me to be too humble :> but I am truly so touched and the luckiest writer in the world to have the fans I have. And now this one blog has wiped me out and it’s time for a nap. I’m glad to be home!

My prayers are with you and your family and friends. I am glad to see that you are doing much better. may you heal well and as quickly as you need.

  • Teresa

    This is so incredibly wonderful!!!

You know…you’re the first author whom I’ve never met that doesn’t feel like a stranger. When I first heard about the accident, I was like…that’s *my* Author!!!!! :(((

    So glad that you’re back!!!

    Please, get well soon!!!

  • Izzy

I am so glad to hear that you are at home and you are back on the mend. You are just so awesome that you are home. Can’t wait to see the new hair style once you are more yourself! We are all here waiting patiently for your full recovery!
We all missed you!! πŸ™‚ Keep getting better πŸ™‚

  • Deidre

I am so, so happy to hear this!
And even though you’re weak, it’s a sign that you overcame a whole helluva lot and you owe it to yourself to recognize this.
You are truly my role model and HERO (yes I said it, I labelled you the dreaded “H” word!).
Thank you for being so amazing and writing such complex stories that make my life worthwhile!
I can identify with your stories, when at time I can’t even identify with the people around me.
You are truly a Valkyrie in disguise, please take a looong road to recovery.
    Enjoy a little pampering! (;
Because you deserve it – we fans, and reavers alike, are all here for you, because you were there for US.
Again, I’m grateful for everyone who helped you on your way to getting better and especially to Jayda, who kept us updated during your hard time.

  • MartinaM

That’s so good news! All the best …

  • Rachelle

I’m so very glad you’re recovering. It’s going to be a two-steps-forward, one-step-back process for a while, which is a damned frustrating place to be in. Regardless, I know you can do it. (Now I’m off to do a little happy dance before my kids get up and wonder why their mother is embarrassing them *yet again*.)

  • Marjorie Liu

Oh, Rob. You are a superhero. I’m so happy right now. Love, love, and more love for you (and your mom).

  • Alicia Miller

Glad to hear you are feeling better. The memory loss is perfectly normal, don’t sweat it. Eat light, easily digestible foods, take naps and listen to your body. rich foods will suck your energy away as your body shuts down to digest. Hacking off your hair works too, I’d also suggest a shower chair, no hot showers yet (due to blood pressure drops), and borrow a power chair for a while maybe.

Gentle yoga stretches help especially concentrate on your legs. The bed rest for so long means you have lost muscle tone so you need to build it back to avoid orthostatic problems or just getting up might exhaust you because your heart is having to make up for the loss of muscle supported blood flow in your legs.

Yeah BTDT have the faded T-shirt. Realize your body is going to take a good six weeks to replace your blood supply and is doing a lot of work even when you are holding still. There is no embarrassment about being weak after almost dying. Beating off the grim reaper takes energy and luck. Inch by inch it will get better

  • Jennifer M

Somehow I managed to miss this post the other day… pardon me while I do a belated HAPPY DANCE OF FREAKING JOY!! I’m so glad to see that you’re home, Rob. Yeah, it’s gonna suck for a while, getting back to 100% and back into your routine, but you’ve got time and lots of people who love you to help you through it. Focus on the furry belleh rubs and the getting better… the rest will come in due time. I’m sorry you don’t remember your “walk towards the light” moment… but I sincerely hope you don’t get another shot at it for many, many (did I mention MANY?) years! Gentle hugs and tons more prayers and happy thoughts heading your way, my dear. And I’m adding, yet again, my thanks to the long list of others before me to Jayda for keeping us posted and for rallying the Reaver Army!

  • Brenda

So glad to hear that you are out of the hospital and on the mend!!!! Best wishes for a full return to health. No more scaring us like that!!

  • Beth E

    YAYAYYAYAAY!! Welcome back Prophet!!!

  • Shiloh Walker

Rob, if you need anybody to do things like hit the post office for you, shoot me an email. You know how close I am and I don’t mind making a few runs to drop some stuff at the USPS if you need it done.

Glad to hear you’re home and doing well.

  • Nohbdy

Praise Zeus, Allah, Buddha and whoeverthehell else is listening! I’m so happy to hear you’re getting better and wish you a speedy and complete recovery. Just rest up and chill with your pack of notsowilddogs and come back to us when you’re strong and ready! Jayda’s been great and has kept us informed but we’ve missed our smart-ass red-headed valkyrie!!

  • Sammy

Best birthday present ever to hear that you’re kicking!

  • Suz

    Welcome back to life!

Please, take your time in getting better. Recovery is a long process. I’m a nursing student, so, I’m not just saying this. ; p Please, take your time and regain your strength. We’re all so glad you’re alive and getting better!

Best wishes. I’ve been praying for you,and will continue to do so.

  • Skye

We’re all so happy that you’re home Rob. Please take your time in getting better, we don’t need you to do anything but eat healthy foods and get some good long rest.
I should lecture you about going online when you’re so weak, but I’ll let it slide for now missy.

Welcome back, I look forward to you being able to wash your own hair again.

  • Breanna

It is damn good to hear from you personally Rob. Jayda’s been great through this whole thing but we’ve missed you. I’m so glad you’re alive, not to mention well enough to post something for us. It’s good to have you back, hope you get fully recovered as quick as possible =]

  • Jadesfires

I have been anxiously awaiting this news since I heard about the accident. I never doubted you! A cockroach isn’t the most flattering thing to be, but alive is good. There are worse things to be than a cockroach – dead would be one of those things. So glad you’re home and recovering! I went out and bought the Trickster novels, which are the only ones I didn’t already have, as soon as I heard, and I’ve been making my way through all the books all over again. Thank you so much for the gift of your writing. It always brings a smile to my face. Take care of yourself!

  • mad_bonnie

I was in a bit of a funk today until I saw your post, Rob. Then suddenly it was Funk-Begone! Now I’m doing the happy dance at my computer. I’ll keep sending healing thoughts your way.

  • Qwill

A separate post to thank Jayda for keeping us informed. Big hugs to you!!! Thank you.

  • Qwill

I am so incredibly happy that you are home and on the mend. Huge and very gentle hugs. (If you need anything and you’re up to it drop me an email or have Jayda do it.) Welcome back!

  • Cath

Thank the Flying Spaghetti Monster that you’re back! All hail your mighty powers of recuperation. We your adoring fans (this is me speaking in the royal plural, because why not) love you and are so happy you’re home.

  • Marietta

Last October I went though a very similar experience, hospital, weakness, and being humbled to the point beyond tears. I can only say that you will make it. It took almost a month before I could walk and another 4 months before I had the strengh to sit outside my home. I was lucky, I had your books, for escape and comfort. Thank you for that, It’s a year later and I am out and about again. Now with a cane and walker but out and about. So I know you will make it. Determination is a funny thing I learned to cry in the showers and to suck it up and keep going in the face of reality. You can do this, set your own time, listen to yourself and kick ass when you need to it helps. Best of healing sent your way.

  • Laura

Welcome home! I hope your continued recovery is speedy.

  • kara-karina

Welcome home, and truly welcome back to life! We missed you. Please, get well soon. *big hug*

  • Lisa Shearin

HUMONGOUS HUG! (Very gently, of course.) I think short hair will look great on you. Go for it!

  • ashley bucci

So glad that u are home!!! And thank u for the best commentary on near death experience ever. Hope u get well soon πŸ™‚ once again YAY!!!!!!!

  • Stephanie

I’m so happy to see that you’re doing so well now, but I knew that you’d be fine. Someone like you can’t stay down for long.

  • teresa

great to hear your back home, take it easy and continue to heal! Jayda deserves a huge cookie for keeping us all updated as best as she could

  • Jess

Good to see you back & with your sense of humour alive and kicking. Gosh knows it must be hard to find a good chuckle amongst all this scary stuff (& in the face of all of the overly cheery people.)

Remember laughter is the best medicine, plus a good dose of sarcasm never hurts.

  • Jacinta

Just because of this post, maybe, just maybe. I might resist the urge to smack the next cockroach that dares scuttle around the kitchen bench. Wow! Coming back to life and saving lives all in the same month, thats some pretty hefty stuff yoiu got there.
Welcome back to the world of the living Rob! πŸ™‚ Everyone’s right though take it slow, let everyone else do all the worrying and you’ll be just fine.
I would just like the add ( I may have said this before but it bears repeating) JAYDA YOU ARE AWSOME for keeping us all up to date.
Here’s to smooth ride on the road to recovery. πŸ™‚

  • GutterBall

You’re still kickin because you, Rob, are full of rocket awesome sauce. Apparently, you surgically replaced your blood with it at some point in your childhood. Good on ya. Foresight, and all that.

In all seriousness, we’re all thrilled and so relieved that you’re pulling through. And we’re all rooting for you. Can we get a Rally Monkey or something? Do the wave? Anybody? Bueller? Bueller?

  • Ann

Welcome home! May you heal quickly and well.

  • laura

omg. i don’t know how i just barely heard about your accident until tonight! i am so glad that i’m reading a fantastically positive update instead of the opposite.

hope your recovery continues and to see you back on twitter and elsewhere again as usual.

  • Bill

    Welcome Home!

  • ladydeathfaerie

welcome home, Rob! this is the best freaking news ever. or at least this week. *grins* we’re all so glad that you’re back and kicking ass.

dude, i was going to write this long and in depth comment about how awesome you are and all of that stuff, but my brain is blank. so i guess… you’re totally awesome and its totally awesome that you’re home! because you are fucking awesome!

and so is Jayda for keeping us all in the loop. everyone is right. she’s a fucking rock star!

now rest your ass up and you’re still in my thoughts. hugs all around.

  • Peg

Welcome back! It’s wonderful that you are well enough to hit the keys again! Naps are the reward for allowing all the indignities of a hospital stay! Gives a whole new meaning to the phase “Better out than in”, don’t it? And as for the cockroach thing – considering the alternative, a cockroach isn’t a bad thing to be… you know what the 2 things are that will survive a nuclear holocaust, don’ t you? But being Keith Richards wouldn’t be too bad either! πŸ™‚ The whole missing memory thing after a near-death blackout is scary…comes in handy tho when they come around with the bills. “Me, in the hospital? When? I don’t remember that!” Just so glad that you are home and able to chat with the world again that I’m babbling. πŸ™‚ Your schedule for the next month is – Rest, eat, nap, hug critters, absorb all the love and healing energy we all will be sending you, think about haircuts and repeat. Just get well, and you will make us all the happiest people on the planet! And Jayda gets her wings now, too! And Mom gets hugs and a nap right along with you!

  • Vicki

SO SO happy to see that you’re home! I was really worried about you. Take it easy and know that so many people are thinking about you. I hope we meet again in the near future so I can give you even more hugs. πŸ™‚

  • Twinchy

    You are friggin’ a.m.a.z.i.n.g. Rob!
Welcome home, take all the time you need to heal up nicely before stressing yourself out over anything. Plus, have mercy and please don’t chop off that wonderful long hair of yours… πŸ˜‰
    *gentle huggles* twinny and Twinchy

  • Kat Richardson

Yay, Cockroach woman! Sounds like a new superhero….

So glad you’re back at home and on the mend!

  • Nicole Peeler

Glad to see you up and talking about your butt-crack. Way to scare us. πŸ˜‰ We missed you. *hugs*

  • Christina

YAY!!! You are home!! Doing the Snoopy happy dance. πŸ˜€ You don’t worry about anything but getting lots of rests. Still sending the healing vibes and prayers your way.

BIG thank you to Jayda for keeping us updated.

  • Jayda

I’ve got a mantra for you, my friend:

    “Wiggle your big toe. ”

You are a combination of a valkyrie and Uma Thurman coming out of that coma in Kill Bill Volume 2 to me now. I’m SOOOOOOOOO happy you’re back! Rest a LOT and do not WORRY about things that do not matter. Let US take care of YOU now, okay? LOVE YOU! πŸ˜€

  • ghost

So happy that you’re on the mend. Welcome back.

  • Paloma

    great news!!! Welcome back…

  • Bethany C.

I’ve never been so happy to read about a cockroach in all my life. Yaaaaaaaaay! Take care of yourself and take it easy…though I’d like to point out that writing isn’t physically exhausting. Selfish, selfish me.

  • Jennifer

Such lovely news – from the horse’s mouth! Er, so to speak….

So glad to hear you’re home.

Best wishes and all good thoughts to a continued and speedy recovery.

  • Rubygirl29

Not a cockroach, but yes, at least a cat with nine lives! This made me so happy, Rob. We’ve all been waiting anxiously for news from Jayda, who has been wonderful, BTW, but to hear from you after what you’ve been through is amazing.

Take it easy, Rob. You’re our Valkyrie, as Jayda said. We’ll keep you in our prayers and thoughts. I tell you, you’ve touched a lot of people who joined together to keep you with us.

  • Odd

Thank you for staying. So amazingly glad you’re a cockroach πŸ™‚ and Jayda is so beyond. *hugs to you both*

I bought Blackoutf first in March, had to go buy all of the previous ones the next day. They have been in pretty much reading rotation since. I paused to read Chimera and Basilisk and now when I finish Blackout, Chimera, Basilisk, Nightlife. Finaly got a copy of Trickster and that will be added

  • Adara67

I was so happy to see that this was from you and not Jayda! (No offense, of course. I’m sure she understands exactly what I mean.) Welcome back! Take good care of yourself! We’ll all be here when you’re better, with smiles on our lips and books in our hands. πŸ˜€

Also, Jayda deserves all the hugs and love in the world for being such a rockstar through this whole thing. I can’t imagine what it would have been like to hear the news of the accident and then hearing absolutely nothing else. Actually, yes, I can imagine it, and in my imagination, it sucks. Thanks so much for keeping us updated, Jayda!

    • Jayda

Offense? Are you kidding me? When *I* saw this post, I thought, “Holy crap, a post not from me? OMG, a post from ROB?! YAY!!!!!!!!!!!” πŸ˜€

Hey, I’m no rock star, I just love my friend.

We *group hugged* when she was down-and-out, can we get a *group hug* now that’s she’s back up?

      {{{{GROUP HUGS ROB & REAVERS}}}}

  • Karen

A cockroach? Really??? LOL So glad to see you posting and back in the land of the living!

Jayda has been fantastic to keep us posted and I’m sure your mom will be happy to finally get a full night’s sleep! We are VERY happy to have you back and wish you a speedy recovery!

  • cassandra phoenix

Welcome back. Take good care of yourself. We’ll be right here.

  • Barbara Elness

So happy to hear you’re home and on the road to recovery. Hope it goes quickly and you’re able to do the things you want to do very soon.

  • Amory David Day

tunnels of light, overrated. Making it home, priceless. Welcome back!

  • Amy D.

So glad you are home and able to be up and about even if just for a short while. Best wishes for your continued speedy or at the very least steady recovery! I think nothing can keep you down for long. πŸ˜‰

  • Sara

It’s great you’re home. Hope you feel better soon!

  • Skarrah

So glad you are home and on the mend! It’s a shame you’re going to lop all that lovely hair off but having to get other people to wash your hair is a real pain in the butt and puts a crimp in any dignity remaining after a stay in the hospital. I hope your recovery is swift. Having your furry companions around will certainly make you feel at least a little bit better. πŸ™‚

  • Jackie B Central Texas

It is hard to keep a good woman down, and out, for long so welcome back and hope recovery goes smoothly and well!

  • Dawn C

*claps uncontrollably* So glad you are back.

Cockroaches are kind of gross, maybe more catlike…You know with the 9 lives and the resilience and attitude thing.

    • Jayda

She’s as tough as Salome, that’s for sure! πŸ˜‰

  • Willow

Yay!!! You’re back!!!! **Happy dance*** Now you just have to keep getting better, and don’t do too much. We’ll wait πŸ™‚

  • Kitana

Bah! I was never really all that scared. You’re one part resilient, two parts bad ass to make a pie that tastes like snark, humor, and a smokey undertone with a hint of having someone’s nephew hit you in the groin with a tennis ball.
There’s no way you weren’t going to pull through.
It’s good to see that all the pieces are intact and more or less in their proper places, even if your ass is a little beveled now from all that helpful wiping business. πŸ™‚
I hope recovery goes smoothly for you and you feel better soon!

  • Kim

I would never think to compare to a cockroach, Rob! You are far more majestic, far more indomitable, far more powerful. A true Force of Nature.

In other words, Rob, you are the Godzilla of the writing world – and from me, that qualifies as the highest compliment there is.

Let your body rest and heal – your soul is an unkillable force of energy.

So very glad you are home, Fearless Leader.

    *Virtual hugs*

  • Cathy/greytfriend

Who’d have thought a cockroach could make me start out grinning ear to ear and then cry a little? I’m so happy to see a post from you, now shut up, stop worrying about silly stuff like contests, and rest! Use your energy for important stuff like scratching the dogs maybe. Or whatever the heck you want, blog away, do whatever you want, sorry, it’s your life, ain’t that GREAT? I’m so, so happy that’s the case. I just can’t tell you how happy I am that you’re home where you belong. I know it’s still going to take time and be hard, but it’s a huge step and I’m thrilled for you.

    • Jayda

EXACTLY my sentiments, Cathy. Listen to Cathy, Rob! πŸ˜€

  • Deb R

Welcome home Rob! Your Reavers missed you terribly and were ever so worried. Recovery will take a very long time, so take all the time you need. We are here for you. Always. If there is anything your Reavers can do for you, just ask. πŸ™‚

Jayda was a rock star through this whole ordeal! I feel like I have made a new friend through this, and Jayda’s strength helped me stay strong.

Rob, take care of yourself first, you need to be well before you worry about the rest. This I know from experience, as well as a long recovery from a hospital stay – it is so hard but you have to allow others to help you. Really. It gets better. πŸ™‚

Still sending positive energy and healing thoughts your way. Welcome back! πŸ™‚

    • Jayda

You are all such incredible people! Rob is SO LUCKY to have you on her side and YOU all helped ME through this too. It wasn’t one-way, you know… you helped me stay strong for Rob, too.

  • Aniday

=D !! … =D !! (There really are no words, but happy and grateful are a few of the emotions I’m feeling)…

Damn right. Missed you, Rob. No shame in resting up after what the hell you’ve been through. We’re just glad to have you back, you sassy vixen.

Take all the time you need. Anyone tells you different, this mob will put the beat-down on ’em.

    With love,
    ~ Aniday.

  • FireDancer_Cat

It’s so good to hear from you personally Rob! Jayda IS wonderful and did an amazing job keeping us all up to date, but it’s reassuring to hear from you directly. Rest up and enjoy spending time with your pack of not-so-wild dogs and get back to us whenever you’re ready. I can assure you, your Reavers aren’t going anywhere!!!

    • Jayda

Damn right! Your Reaver Army has expanded and we’re all like the dudes in 300 with our shields all up around you, Rob… except… *looking down at my abs* Damn, now I’m all depressed again. πŸ˜‰

  • Denisetwin

SOOOO Glad you are back home and doing so much better! My twin sister and “baby” (6’4″) brother met you at ComicCon this year and came back raving about what a great person you were in addition to being a great author. So happy you are doing better!

  • copyninja

SO. VERY. HAPPY… to see you back up and about!!! Hope you get back to full power soon (try doing one of those Rocky/Karate Kid montages–I hear they only take a few minutes and come with catchy theme music…;))))))

  • Amber

So happy you’re back home and getting better!

  • Jana

Clearly I shall hold cockroaches in higher regard from this point on. We missed you at Dragon*Con. See you there in 2012! Go Rob!

  • Val

So glad you’re home and recuperating.

  • klbloodfang

Today has been filled with very wonderful news for me, but knowing that you are back home and well has been the best one! Welcome back Rob!!!

  • Jill

So freakin’ wonderful to “hear” my favorite author again, back on her own blog! Keep getting well while we all keep sending massive amounts of positive energy your way! (that part of Indiana must be pretty well lit up with positive energy vibes flowing into it)

  • Ali_U2fan

Welcome back, Rob!! I hope you recover soon and get back to being the Kick-Ass author that you are.I’m so glad you’re back!

  • Jen

OMG!!! Welcome home! I’ve NEVER been so happy to see a cockroach before πŸ™‚ Best wishes for a speedy . It’s so good to read your voice again! *hugs*

  • vinity

Welcome home. Don’t push too hard. Take care of yourself and heal.

  • Lingeorge

Welcome back from death! Take care of yourself.

  • Lingeorge

So very glad to see you “Unsquashed”. Welcome home. It will be a slower process than you desire, but hey, coming back from death should take a while to adjust. Please take care of yourself first — and keep the books coming when you can.

  • Natalie

Such a relief to see you posting πŸ™‚ you’ve been greatly missed! take it easy and here’s hoping for a quick recovery!

*Dances* Oh my god! welcome home! we missd you! oh my god! blessed be! )O(

  • Tracy

Rob, we’re all SO glad that you’ve beat this thing, you’ve no idea. But we knew you could. And Jayda ROCKS! She was so wonderful at keeping us updated no matter what the news.

Recovery will probably suck, it usually does for everyone, but it’s just a matter of time before you’re kickin’ butt again.

    Welcome home!!!!

  • Naomi G Gargano

I cannot tell you how happy this post made me…so glad you are home, and on the road to recovery. Yes Jayda has been great, I was so grateful to her for updates. I was taking a break from loading books into boxes for a move, and was kind pissed at my husband I was lugging these heavy boxes around…well, I have been told haven’t I ? I am grateful I am well enough, especially at my age to be able to lug these boxes around. Please take care, get strong and well soon, we have all been so worried.

  • Rane Aria

Welcome Back Rob! Welcome Home! *hugs* Hey, maybe everyone was jealous of your booty ;D

  • Melankalia

Welcome back , Rob! So glad you are doing well!!!

  • Marchia

I’m so glad you are feeling up to writing to us. I know we don’t really know you in real life, but as fans we all wish you well and I for one am glad you were feeling well enough to write to us.

  • Brian

Welcome home, Rob. It’s great to read you again.

  • GingaNinja

HOLY SHIT YOU’RE BACK! I don’t think I’ve ever been so excited over a piece of writing in my life!
… Okay, I lied. I’ve been this excited over pretty much every new book you’ve released, but the fact remains.
Welcome back, Rob! We missed you so much!

  • Ashley

    Welcome back, Rob!

  • Sarah

Welcome home, Rob! I am so glad to hear that you’re on the mend, especially after all the ordeals you’ve been through. I’m sending all the blessings and well wishes I possibly can so that you make a full and speedy recovery very soon!

WOOHOOOOOOOOO! Welcome home!!!! Missed you horribly!!! Take care of yourself and don’t push it. We’re when you’re ready.

  • Maria

Glad to see you up and about–or at least home. Don’t worry about the hair or the butt stuff. We’re all annoyingly human; just kills the whole kick-ass thing, but we won’t tell if you don’t.

  • Karen Kaspari-Groff

Welcome back. You will get better every day. You can’t keep a Valkyrie down!!!!

Welcome back! I’m so excited I don’t even know what to say besides that seeing this took a crappy early-morning mood (a Cal-worthy one at that) and made me insanely happy I can’t sleep past seven am. <3

Take care of yourself and get well soon!

  • Jus Accardo

And don’t you worry about us. You just concentrate on getting better & let your Reavers take care of you for awhile. πŸ™‚

Rob, I’m so glad to see that you’re home and getting better! πŸ˜€ I also can’t believe that after such an ordeal you even thought about getting online to show us that your spirit and sense of humor remain intact. ^_^ One of the many reasons we all adore you, I suppose. πŸ˜‰ Take whatever time you need to get well and thank you for this. ^_^ It made my day. ^_^

  • Rachel Caine
